Where Do I Find My STAR Registration Status?
You can find your overall STAR registration status, property details and benefit type (Exemption or Credit) within the Homeowner Benefit Portal.
- Access NYSDTF Online Services: Go to the official NYSDTF website and log in to or create your Individual Online Services account.
- Navigate to the Portal: Once logged in, look for the Homeowner Benefit Portal (it may be listed under “Services” or “Real property tax”).
- View Status: Within the portal, you can confirm if you are registered for the STAR benefit. View the benefit type you receive (Basic or Enhanced) and check if your registration is active and current. This is also where you can update your information or enroll in direct deposit for the STAR credit.
How Do I Know if I Have the STAR Exemption Instead of the Credit?
If you have been a long-time recipient and never switched, you likely have the STAR Exemption.
- Check Your Tax Bill: The easiest way to confirm the STAR Exemption status is by looking at your school property tax bill. If you have the exemption, the amount of the STAR savings will be listed as a reduction directly on your tax bill.
- Exemption vs. Credit: New York law requires all new STAR applicants since 2016 to receive the STAR Credit (a check). Homeowners who applied before this date were grandfathered into the STAR Exemption (a reduction on the bill). But they can voluntarily switch to the credit at any time via the Homeowner Benefit Portal.
